Appetizer: Mussels

I really can’t tell you how delicious mussels are. If you haven’t tried them, you are really missing out. If you like shrimp, you will like mussels. Let the anxiety go. They really are worth eating!

Appetizer: Mussels


  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1 pound live mussels, rinsed.


  1. Heat olive oil and butter in medium-large pot over medium heat. Add garlic and thyme and stir until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add wine and bring to a boil over high heat.
  3. Add mussels, cover, and cook until mussels have opened – about 3 minutes.

By the way, did I mention how EASY these are to make? So easy! If you haven’t cooked mussels before, let me give you a little advice about purchasing. After you purchase the live mussels, take them out of the bag within an hour or they will die. Place in a bowl in the fridge and cover with a damp cloth/paper towel. Use within 3 days. To maintain freshness, replace the bowl daily to get rid of the excess fluids.
